About

Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy

Saarland University Medical Center is a maximum care provider in southwest Germany. Around 54000 inpatients and 213000 outpatients are treated annually in the various specialist clinics and institutes. As the largest hospital in the region, the clinic with almost 1200 beds and its specialized university outpatient departments takes on numerous tasks beyond the classic maximum care. With 10 intensive care units and over 200 intensive care beds, the UKS is the most important hospital for the care of critically ill patients in Saarland.

Around 120 anesthetists work in the department of anesthesiology, intensive care medicine and pain therapy and perform 25000 anesthesia procedures every year. In our own interdisciplinary intensive care unit with 26 beds, around 1800 patients from many different specialist departments are treated every year.

Under the organizational management of the department of anaesthesiology, intensive care medicine and pain therapy, a team of specially trained nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, speech therapists and many other professional groups work closely together. We treat patients after extensive operations as well as life-threatening illnesses or seriously injured patients. Our focus is on the treatment of patients after esophageal, pancreatic and liver surgery, as well as the therapy of sepsis and lung failure. We take over seriously injured patients from all over southwest Germany and Luxembourg.

We are also a certified ventilator weaning center. Our department provides the medical staff for 2 emergency medical vehicles and a rescue helicopter and thus takes part in the preclinical emergency medical care in the greater region. The main research areas of our department are intensive care medicine, emergency medicine and pharmacology. The clinic participates in a wide range of student training for doctors in the fields of anesthesia, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine and pain therapy.
